I was lulled to sleep
By disappointment, despair
Pain and grief.
There were so many days
I thought I would
Never find relief.
Then, suddenly, one day
The Creator of the universe
Gave the ground where I stood
A gentle shake.
I stood still and was astonished
At the place where
I came awake.
I stood on the other side of
An emotional and spiritual storm;
The Lover of my soul had
Protected me from permanent harm.
My soul is awake again.
Heaviness and dread no longer prevail.
I find joy in so many places.
I have peace and hope with every exhale.
I’m awake now
To new life, new hope, new joy
New possibilities.
My future is bright.
There is so much to see and do
So many lives to touch—oh the feasibilities!
I am awake to see myself with fresh eyes.
No longer hiding behind pretense and lies.
I like what I see.

I love being creative especially when I am inspired by other artists. I wrote this poem in the middle of the night on March 13, 2025 while listening to Toby Mac’s new album, Heaven on My Mind. The song Oh My Soul (Psalm 103) reminded me just how blessed I am to be able to look at my life with fresh eyes. It doesn’t matter what we face in life, we can always find a reason to praise the Lord. He is always with us even in the hard times.
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psalm 103:1-5
